The appointment of Associate Professor Jean Ho ’03 as the first Asian Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of the Journal of International Economic Law serves as a strong validation of NUS Law’s standing as a global powerhouse in legal research. As EIC, she will be a gatekeeper for quality manuscripts that would advance JIEL’s strong reputation as the leading platform for thoughtful and impactful scholarship that defines, develops and reimagines international economic law. Her term will start in June 2026 and run for five years.

On 29 January 2026, Professor Douglas Kysar delivered a lecture titled “Systems so Perfect: Alternative Proteins and the Dream of Abundance” at the performance hall located on the Kent Ridge campus of the National University of Singapore, Faculty of Law. This lecture outlined ways in which contemporary modes of intensive meat production impose harms, yet industrial animal agriculture as a sector within the global economy remains largely free of consequential regulatory controls.

The year 2026 marks a significant milestone in Singapore’s legal and, indeed, national history. As the bicentennial of Singapore’s modern legal and judicial system, the year opened with an important lecture organised by the Singapore Law Review (SLR), Asia’s oldest student-run legal publication that is managed exclusively by students of the National University of Singapore, Faculty of Law. On 9 January 2026, Mr Murali Pillai S.C., the Senior Minister of State for Law & Transport, delivered a thoughtful and timely reflection on Singapore’s legal development and the enduring role of the Rule of Law, at the 37th Singapore Law Review Lecture.

Professor Ying Khai Liew (Melbourne Law School) delivered a lecture titled “Constructive Trusts: From Confusion to Clarity” at the performance hall located on the new Kent Ridge campus of the National University of Singapore Faculty of Law. Drawing on developments in Singapore, England and Australia, Professor Liew addressed the confusion that has arisen in the legal area of constructive trusts, including their roles and rationales, their relationship with rights and remedies, the relevance of judicial discretion, and the complex law issues they create in cross-border disputes.

Congratulations to Professor Kumaralingam Amirthalingam, Assistant Professor Ivan Lee ’14, Professor Ng-Loy Wee Loon, S.C. ’87, Associate Professor Burton Ong ’99, Associate Professor Tan Zhong Xing ’12, Professor Umakanth Varottil PhD ’10 and Associate Professor Helena Whalen-Bridge LLM ’02 on being the recipients of the Faculty-level Annual Teaching Excellence Awards! The awards recognise faculty members who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to education, and were presented during the Start of Term Welcome lunch on 14 January 2026.

NUS Law is delighted to welcome the following visiting faculty: Professor Franco Ferrari; Professor Miriam Goldby; Professor Greg Gordon; Professor Douglas Kysar, Visiting Tan Ah Tah Professor; Professor Liew Ying Khai, Kwa Geok Choo Distinguished Visitor; Associate Professor Peter Chau; Assistant Professor Muhammad Rifky Wicaksono; and Dr Georgia Jenkins. They were introduced to the NUS Law family at the Start of Term Welcome Lunch, which took place at the newly opened Wee Chong Jin Moot Court on the Faculty’s new Kent Ridge premises.

As we look back on the second half of 2025, we applaud our students for their excellent showing at moot competitions near and far. Travelling to countries including Sydney, Tokyo and Hanoi, our students gained a broadening of their world views as they benefitted from the opportunity to argue legal standpoints against peers from law schools around the world. Congratulations to the students on their achievements!

We congratulate four of our alumni who have been appointed as office-bearers of The Law Society of Singapore for 2026. Professor Tan Cheng Han, S.C. ’87 takes office as the new President, with Mr Dinesh Singh Dhillon ’94 and Mr Koh Choon Guan Daniel ’93 appointed as Vice Presidents, and Ms Yee May Kuen Peggy Sarah ’87 assuming the role of Treasurer. We are proud to celebrate the achievements of our alumni as they continue to shape and strengthen Singapore’s legal community.

Faculty, staff, students and alumni of NUS Law, along with their families and friends, gathered at its current home on Bukit Timah Campus, or BTC as it is fondly known, on 15 November 2025 to honour the cherished memories ahead of its move back to Kent Ridge Campus in January 2026. About 480 turned up to bid farewell to the campus, nestled in the lush greenery of Singapore’s Botanic Gardens, one last time to celebrate the community and reflect on the enduring legacy the campus helped create.

Mooting is a big part of the law school experience. In this article, our mooters, past and present, reflect on their memories of the Wee Chong Jin Moot Court, one of the most iconic spaces on campus. The NUS Faculty of Law will be relocating from its current campus at Bukit Timah to Kent Ridge in December 2025.
