NUS Law Excels at the International Negotiation Competition 2016

July 11, 2016 | Student
Too Fang Yi ’16, Associate Professor Joel Lee and Manek Minhas ’16

The NUS Law team emerged as 1st Runner Up in the recent International Negotiation Competition (INC) 2016. The team representing Singapore consisted of Too Fang Yi ’16 and
Manek Minhas ’16 and was coached by Associate Professor Joel Lee.

The INC is the oldest and most renowned law student competition focusing on international legal negotiation and has been organised annually in countries all around the world. INC 2016 was held in the beautiful city of Lucerne, Switzerland, and was hosted by Universität Luzern and organised by Lawbility AG. Twenty four of the best teams from around the world arrived in Lucerne after having won their national negotiation rounds, ready to test their mettle against the competition.

This year, the competition consisted of three rounds of negotiations, the first two rounds being two-party negotiations and the final round being a four-party negotiation. All three rounds involved the negotiation and formation of contracts dealing with the production of artisanal and premium chocolates and cumulated in the formation of a Joint Venture between four parties in the last round.

This competition was an invaluable opportunity for students to experience an integral part of legal work. International negotiation is an area that few students are exposed to, and the INC gave the participants the chance to discover the skills needed and also begin to overcome the many challenges that lawyers face when negotiating.

The team would like to thank everyone for all their support and guidance in making this journey an exciting and unforgettable one, in particular:

  • Associate Professor Joel Lee and Pearl Seet for the invaluable guidance and support throughout the INC in Lucerne
  • The INC Alumni for taking precious time to coach the team: Ms Chia Lyn Lynn, Ms Charmian Aw, Ms Lin Wenrong, Ms Rachel Yee, Mr Marcus Lim, Mr Eddy Hirono, Mr Peh Zu Hao, Ms Low Zhen Er, Mr Darren Tay, Ms Mehaerun Simaa d/o Ravichandran, Mr Zulhafni Zulkeflee
  • NUS Law and the Dean’s Office for their generous support for the INC Teams through the years.
