October 20, 2014 | School

NUS Law welcomed The Honourable Chief Justice (CJ) Mogoeng Mogoeng, Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa, and his wife on 20 October 2014. CJ Mogoeng Mogoeng and his entourage were hosted by Professor Stephen Girvin, Vice Dean for Research, and Assistant Professor Sandra Booysen.

About 20 students and academic colleagues gathered for the visit in the Lee Sheridan Conference room, and had a rare opportunity to exchange ideas with and ask questions of the CJ on matters of legal education and constitutional law.

The CJ was very interested in how NUS Law achieved its current standing as the number 2 law school in Asia and discussed the LLB program in some detail. He then fielded several questions from faculty and students on the South African legal system and the functioning of the Constitutional Court in particular.

CJ Mogoeng Mogoeng was in Singapore to present the 21st Singapore Academy of Law Annual Lecture 2014. His lecture “Twenty years of the South African Constitution – Origins, Aspirations and Delivery”, took place on 21 October 2014, at the Supreme Court Auditorium. During the lecture, the CJ said that Singapore was a beacon of hope for his country, as both Singapore and South Africa had visionary founding fathers, Mr Lee Kuan Yew and Mr Nelson Mandela. CJ Mogoeng Mogoeng reviewed South Africa’s record since democracy and talked about how the constitution and the law have granted its people freedom and ensured a better society. He then discussed some of the challenges that lie ahead for the nation.
