NUS Law alumnus Ang Cheng Hock appointed as Judge of the High Court

May 5, 2025 | Alumni, Faculty

We congratulate our alumnus, Mr Ang Cheng Hock ’95, on his appointment as Judge of the High Court, with effect from 1 May 2025.

Mr Ang graduated from NUS Law with First Class Honours, and went on to secure his Master’s degree at Yale Law School in 1998. He was one of the youngest lawyers to be appointed a Senior Counsel at the age of 38 in 2009.

He was a partner in Messrs Allen & Gledhill, and a member of its Litigation and Dispute Resolution department and the firm’s executive committee, before being appointed as a Judicial Commissioner in May 2018 and a Judge of the High Court in August 2019. In his position as Judge, he heard a wide range of cases from civil and commercial disputes to criminal matters.

He resigned as a Judge to assume his current position as Deputy Attorney-General from 1 October 2022. In this position, he oversees the work of the Attorney-General Chambers’ Civil Division, and its Advocacy Group. Mr Ang also oversees part of the work of the Attorney-General Chambers’ Criminal Division, including several high-profile criminal prosecutions.

In all, Mr Ang has amassed 29 years of experience from his time as a practising lawyer, as a Judge, and as Deputy Attorney-General.

Professor Andrew Simester, Dean of NUS Law, said, “Mr Ang Cheng Hock was a valuable member of the judiciary when he was a High Court Judge from 2019 to 2022, and will undoubtedly continue to make key contributions in resuming his position as Judge. He joins a list of distinguished alumni who have taken public office in Singapore, and this appointment attests to his outstanding credentials. We warmly congratulate Mr Ang and celebrate his achievements.”

With this appointment, the Supreme Court will have a total of 36 Judges (including the Chief Justice, three Justices of the Court of Appeal, four Judges of the Appellate Division, 18 Judges of the High Court, five Judicial Commissioners, five Senior Judges) and 24 International Judges.
