On 21 October 2024, the Centre for Banking and Finance Law (CBFL) welcomed a panel of three eminent speakers as part of the series of seminars in conjunction with CBFL’s 10th anniversary this year. These were Professor Dr Martin Wenz, Chair in Business Taxation and the Laws of International and Liechtenstein Taxation, University of Liechtenstein, Ms Lim Ping Ping, Vice Chairwoman, Global Family Wealth, and member of the LGT Executive Board APAC, LGT Bank (Singapore) Ltd, and Mr Lian Chuan Yeoh, Partner in the Private Client and Tax team of Withers KhattarWong, Singapore. Associate Professor Christian Hofmann, Deputy Director of CBFL, moderated Professor Wenz’s presentation and the panel discussion which followed.

On 11 October 2024, the Centre for Banking and Finance Law (CBFL) was pleased to welcome Professor Anna Veneziano, Deputy Secretary-General of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT), and a tenured Professor of Comparative Law at the University of Téramo, Italy. This roundtable discussion was part of a series of events in conjunction with CBFL’s 10th anniversary. Associate Professor Sandra Booysen, Director of CBFL, moderated the roundtable session with Professor Veneziano.

On 8 October 2024, the Centre for Banking and Finance Law (CBFL) welcomed Professor Catherine Malecki, Professor of Private Law, Université Rennes 2 (LiRIS EA 7481), Institut universitaire de France (IUF) as part of the series of seminars in conjunction with CBFL’s 10th anniversary this year. Associate Professor Christian Hofmann, Deputy Director of CBFL, moderated Professor Malecki’s seminar titled "Sustainable Finance: Latest Developments from a European and French Perspective.”

With growing wealth in Southeast Asia, including among Muslim communities in the region, and in Singapore particularly, the demand for Islamic wealth management products and services is expected to rise. Despite strong demand, Singapore’s Islamic finance industry seems to have stalled relative to its potential, in part, due to the lack of regulatory engagement. Although there have been efforts by the Singapore Government to support Islamic wealth management services, the sector remains largely self-regulated and de-centralized.  A further challenge to Singapore’s Islamic finance sector arises from the Islamic acceptability of its products and services; that is, if the products are perceived to be lacking in religious authenticity and are thus not taken up by consumers.

On 27 August 2024, the Centre for Banking and Finance Law (CBFL) welcomed Professor Vincenzo Bavoso, Professor of Commercial Law, University of Manchester. Associate Professor Sandra Booysen, Director of CBFL, moderated the Professor Bavoso’s seminar titled "The Regulation of Speculative Wars: Short-selling and Short-squeezing.”

On 13 August 2024, the Centre for Banking and Finance Law (CBFL) welcomed Professor Konstantinos Sergakis, Professor of Capital Markets Law and Corporate Governance, University of Glasgow and Peter Ellinger Visiting Professor, Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore. Associate Professor Sandra Booysen, Director of CBFL, moderated the Professor Sergakis’ lecture titled ‘Democratizing Finance via AI: Investor Protection and Investor Engagement’. 

On 25 July 2024, CBFL Adjunct Research Fellow Jack Wright Nelson presented a working paper titled “Relational Contracts, Good Faith, and the Braganza Duty: Locating the Abuse of Rights Doctrine in English Contract Law” at an event organized by CBFL Director Sandra Booysen.

The Centre for Banking & Finance Law (CBFL) is pleased to have Dr Cayle Lupton from University of Johannesburg conduct a webinar on , “Documentary Credits - Document Examination in the Era of Targeted Sanctions and Artificial Intelligence”. The webinar was held on 27 June 2024 and attended by 40 number of participants worldwide. 

On 13 June 2024, Professor Ignacio Tirado (UNIDROIT Secretary-General) conducted a dialogue “Rethinking Transnational Law: Selected Issues”. Professor Ignacio Tirado reflected on how transnational law is shaping international and domestic private law legislation around the world.

CBFL Visiting Scholar, Dr Lisa-Marie Ross her recently published her article, co-written with Kathrin Asschenfeldt, “The Role of International Commercial Arbitration in Mastering Climate Change Disputes: Initiatives, Advantages, and Challenges“ Journal of International Arbitration Vol 41 Issue 3 (2024).

On 4 June 2024, Professor Will Bateman (Associate Dean for Research at the ANU College of Law) conducted a webinar with the Centre of Banking and Finance Law discussing the form and function of “legal tender”, exploring questions about the nature of financial stability in a world without legal tender.

CBFL alumni participated in the 21st ASLI Conference (29-30 May 2024) hosted by the Faculty of Law, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. Dr Petrina Tan convened a panel discussion on ‘Financial Regulation and Regulatory Design in Asia’ with panellists including CBFL alumni Dr Alex Zhou Qin (Macau University of Science and Technology) and Rachel Phang (Singapore Management University) who presented their papers on, ‘Financial Regulation in the Context of Financial Inclusion: Understanding the Logic of China’s Banking Wealth Management Regulation’ and  ‘Consumer Protection and Retail Cryptocurrency Trading in Singapore’ respectively.
