The final seminar in the 13th Developments in IP Law Series on trade marks was held on 5 February 2026 at the Suntec City Convention Centre. About 150 participants signed up for this session ranging from trade mark examiners from IPOS to organisations and law firms such as Cambridge University Press, Defence Science & Technology Agency, Fraser and Neave, National Heritage Board, Singapore Tourism Board, Bird & Bird ATMD, Drew & Napier and Lee & Lee. EW Barker Centre for Law & Business is proud to continue to be a co-organiser of this event with IPOS International.

On 29 January 2026, IPOS International (in collaboration with the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business) conducted a seminar at Suntec City on the developments in the law on breach of confidence and privacy and data protection in 2025.

The EW Barker Centre for Law & Business (EWBCLB) continues its collaboration with IPOS International in 2026 as a co-organiser of the Developments in IP Law Series, now in its 13th edition. The session on copyright, held on 22 January at Suntec City Convention Centre, attracted a good crowd, with participants from law firms such as Allen & Gledhill, Rajah & Tann, Amica Law LLC, and That.Legal, and a wide range of agencies, companies and organisations that include the Attorney-General’s Chambers, COMPASS, IFPI, Walt Disney, National Heritage Board and Housing & Development Board. The other three seminars are: Patents (15 January); Breach of Confidence/Privacy & Data Protection (29 January); Trade Marks/Passing Off (5 February).

On 28 August, the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, hosted a seminar on “Corporate Governance: Legal and Theoretical Perspectives.” The keynote speaker, Dr Peter Underwood from the University of Auckland, delivered a stimulating lecture examining corporate governance through both legal and theoretical lenses.

On 21 August 2025, the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business convened a symposium examining contemporary issues in the law of restitution and unjust enrichment. The event, moderated by Professor Steven Elliott KC, gathered faculty members, researchers, students and practitioners for a stimulating evening of legal debate.

On 6 August 2025, the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business (EWBCLB) and the Centre for Technology, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence & the Law (TRAIL) co-organised a roundtable symposium at the Bukit Timah Campus of NUS Law titled “Access to Justice in the Creative Economy”. The session was convened by Professor David Tan (NUS Law) and Professor Graeme Austin (Victoria University of Wellington/Melbourne).

In a landmark gathering of leading legal scholars, policymakers and industry experts, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Director General Daren Tang delivered a keynote address calling for human creativity to remain at the core as IP laws evolve. His call set the tone for the two-day “Intellectual Property and Technology in the 21st Century” conference organised by the Centre for Technology, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence & the Law (TRAIL) and the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business at NUS Law, co-hosted with law schools from Columbia, Oxford and Tsinghua, marking the first academic collaboration of its kind across these leading global institutions.

Professor Henry T. C. Hu from the University of Texas School of Law delivered a Distinguished Visitor Lecture at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, hosted by the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business. Moderated by Professor Hans Tjio, Director of the Centre, the July 30, 2025 lecture explored how transformative institutional investor changes present increasing challenges to core corporate governance principles and practices. Mr. Koh Boon Hwee, the Chairman of the Singapore Exchange Group, was the guest of honor and delivered the introductory speech.

On 31 July and 1 August 2025, the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business (EWBCLB) and the Centre for Banking & Finance Law (CBFL) at the National University of Singapore, Faculty of Law held the Law & FinTech Conference 2025. The conference was convened by Associate Professor Christian Hofmann, National University of Singapore, Faculty of Law, who is also the Deputy Director of CBFL. The conference was opened with a keynote address by Professor Henry T. C. Hu, Professor and Allan Shivers Chair in the Law of Banking and Finance at the University of Texas on “The Bitcoin-Gold False Equivalence”.

The EW Barker Centre for Law and Business organised a Discussion Workshop on Malaysian Contract Law Reform on 27-28 June 2025. We were privileged to host a Working Group comprising senior members of the Malaysian bench, bar and academia, assembled by the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Malaysian Prime Minister’s Department at NUS to examine proposed reforms to Malaysia’s Contracts Act 1950.
