In a landmark gathering of leading legal scholars, policymakers and industry experts, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Director General Daren Tang delivered a keynote address calling for human creativity to remain at the core as IP laws evolve. His call set the tone for the two-day “Intellectual Property and Technology in the 21st Century” conference organised by the Centre for Technology, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence & the Law (TRAIL) and the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business at NUS Law, co-hosted with law schools from Columbia, Oxford and Tsinghua, marking the first academic collaboration of its kind across these leading global institutions.

On 31 July and 1 August 2025, the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business (EWBCLB) and the Centre for Banking & Finance Law (CBFL) at the National University of Singapore, Faculty of Law held the Law & FinTech Conference 2025. The conference was convened by Associate Professor Christian Hofmann, National University of Singapore, Faculty of Law, who is also the Deputy Director of CBFL. The conference was opened with a keynote address by Professor Henry T. C. Hu, Professor and Allan Shivers Chair in the Law of Banking and Finance at the University of Texas on “The Bitcoin-Gold False Equivalence”.

Professor Henry T. C. Hu from the University of Texas School of Law delivered a Distinguished Visitor Lecture at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, hosted by the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business. Moderated by Professor Hans Tjio, Director of the Centre, the July 30, 2025 lecture explored how transformative institutional investor changes present increasing challenges to core corporate governance principles and practices. Mr. Koh Boon Hwee, the Chairman of the Singapore Exchange Group, was the guest of honor and delivered the introductory speech.

The EW Barker Centre for Law and Business organised a Discussion Workshop on Malaysian Contract Law Reform on 27-28 June 2025. We were privileged to host a Working Group comprising senior members of the Malaysian bench, bar and academia, assembled by the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Malaysian Prime Minister’s Department at NUS to examine proposed reforms to Malaysia’s Contracts Act 1950.

On 3 June 2025, Professors Zetzsche and Sinnig, both from University of Luxembourg, delivered two academic presentations under the joint title “Oppression Remedy and Abuse of Rights from a Comparative Perspective”.

On 8 April 2025, Professor Janet O’Sullivan from the University of Cambridge delivered a lively and thought-provoking lecture on “Puzzles in the Law of Economic Duress and Lawful Act Duress”, hosted by the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business at NUS Law.

On 20 March 2025, Ms Tina Mavraki from Ingenios Ltd presented a webinar on “Fixing the Legal & Governance Health of Your Organisations: A Focused Webinar on Corporate Culture” over zoom. Professor Ernest Lim moderated this webinar.

Professor David Tan, Head (Intellectual Property) at the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business and Co-director of the Centre for Technology, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence & the Law (TRAIL), both at NUS Law, discussed how parodies may be better protected in trademark infringement and dilution claims.

On Thursday 27 February 2025 at the Conrad Centennial, the 12th Developments in IP Law Series came to a close with its final of four sessions focusing on trade marks with over 150 participants in attendance.

On 20 February 2025, Mr Benjamin Wong represented NUS Law at the Breach of Confidence/Privacy & Data Protection session of the 12th Developments in IP Law series, co-organised by the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business and IPOS International. This annual flagship event at Suntec City Convention Centre attracted about 100 participants for this session with legal practitioners from a wide field of law firms, corporate entities and government sectors. Amongst the attendees were representatives from A*STAR, Changi Airport Group, Health Sciences Authority, Housing & Development Board, Mastercard and Microsoft Asia.

On 17 February 2025, the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business hosted Dr Ekaterina Aristova, a Research Fellow at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights (Faculty of Law, University of Oxford). The talk was moderated by Justin Lim, Sheridan Fellow at NUS Law.
