Commercial Law and Policy Conference 2026, hosted by the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business, NUS Law, on 16 and 17 July 2026, brought together leading scholars from Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania to examine how commercial law is responding to rapid economic, technological and societal change. The two-day conference explored the increasingly significant role of public policy in shaping commercial law across a wide range of legal contexts.

The EW Barker Centre for Law & Business (EWBCLB) hosted the 2026 Global Corporate Governance Colloquium (GCGC) from 12 to 13 June, bringing together leading scholars from around the world to share research across law, economics and finance. As the annual colloquium rotates among only 12 distinguished institutions—including Harvard University, the University of Oxford and the University of Tokyo—hosting GCGC marks a significant international milestone for EWBCLB. The conference also showcased the Centre’s role in advancing corporate governance scholarship, with EWBCLB-affiliated NUS Law academics leading discussions and intellectual exchange.

EW Barker Centre for Law and Business (EWBCLB) is proud to be a Supporting Organisation for Singapore IP Week 2026. Now in its fifteenth edition, Singapore IP Week has established itself as a premier global IP event. It convenes policymakers, business leaders, and legal experts from around the world to exchange insights, foster connections, and discuss emerging issues shaping the IP landscape.

On 11 June 2026, scholars, practitioners and governance experts gathered at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore for a conference organised in association with the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI), titled Corporate Scandals in Asia and Beyond: Legal and Policy Implications. The conference brought together leading experts to examine corporate failures, governance breakdowns and regulatory responses as part of a major book project to be published by Cambridge University Press in 2027.

On 4 and 5 June 2026, scholars from Asia, Europe and North America gathered at the National University of Singapore for the Private Law Consortium Conference, hosted by the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business. Under the theme “Private Law and the Market: Business, Finance and Economics”, the conference examined how legal frameworks are adapting to new market realities, from digital assets and consumer finance to sustainability and data governance.

On 21 May 2026, the Institute for Information Law (IViR) at Amsterdam Law School hosted the European launch of Fashion and Intellectual Property, an edited book published by Cambridge University Press, at the Trademark Law Institute Conference.

A recent webinar brought together scholars to examine the promise and perils of voluntary compliance, with the session taking place on 14 April 2026.

On 8 April 2026, the Asia-Pacific Centre for Environmental Law (APCEL) and EW Barker Centre for Law & Business (EWBCLB) at the National University of Singapore, Faculty of Law, and the Asian Law Schools Association (ALSA) co-hosted a workshop on Corporate Sustainability. Both Virginia Harper Ho, Professor of Law at City University of Hong Kong and Visiting Scholar Professor at EWBCLB, and Jolene Lin, Associate Professor, and director of APCEL at NUS Law are co-chairs of the ALSA’s Environmental and Sustainability Chapter. They led the discussion on two papers that addressed major issues in sustainable business law. The workshop was attended by young and established scholars from the three entities, fostering a lively interdisciplinary conversation.

In a stimulating evening, the EW Barker Centre hosted a Distinguished Visitor Lecture by Professor Charles Mitchell KC (Hon). Held on 10 March 2026, and moderated by Professor Steven Elliott KC, the lecture drew on collaborative work with Dr Jessica Hudson and offered an analytical preview of their forthcoming article in the Law Quarterly Review.

On 12 March 2026, Professor David Tan launched Fashion and Intellectual Property, an edited book published by Cambridge University Press, at the National Museum of Singapore (NMS).

An evening of rigorous ideas, lived judicial experience, and global perspective transformed the Jones Day Distinguished Lecture into a vibrant and timely exchange on the rule of law and commercial dispute resolution at The Westin, Singapore.

The EW Barker Centre for Law & Business of NUS Law hosted an academic seminar on 4 February 2026 on the question, “Can Parents Sell Their Children’s Property?”. It was delivered by Dr. Rachel Leow, Associate Professor at LSE Law School, and moderated by Professor Hans Tjio. The event brought together academics, researchers, and legal practitioners for a detailed discussion on this complex area of private law.
