1st Annual Symposium on EU-Asia Financial Relations

NUS Law’s Centre for Banking & Finance Law (CBFL) teamed up with CEPS (Centre for European Policy Studies, Brussels), ASIFMA (Asia Securities Industry & Financial Markets Association, Hong Kong), Afore Consulting, Brussels, and the Sim Kee Boon Institute of Financial Economics at SMU to organise the 1st Annual Symposium on EU-Asia Relations in Financial Services from 18-20 June, 2014. The event was held in Singapore and had the aim of promoting convergence and investments in EU-Asian financial markets.

For three days, more than 100 high level European and Asian policy makers, regulators, academics and industry representatives gathered to discuss important issues impacting the effective functioning of EU Asia trade, investment and capital markets. The event featured dinners and cocktails, keynote speeches, panel discussions and break-out and networking sessions which took place at the Raffles Hotel, the Carlton Hotel and SMU’s Mochtar Riady Auditorium.

Public sector organisations that were represented included the European Commission; the Delegation of the EU to Singapore; Bank Indonesia; Financial Services Authority, Indonesia; Bursa Malaysia Berhad; Financial Services Agency, Japan; Monetary Authority of Singapore; Singapore Exchange and Department of Finance, Philippines. Other key industry players such as CFA Institute; ISDA; International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO); SWIFT; Standard and Poor’s Rating Services; PWC and Thomson Reuters were also represented.

CBFL Director Assoc Prof Dora Neo gave the opening speech at the welcome cocktail and dinner at the East India Room, Raffles Hotel. CBFL Deputy Director Assoc Prof Alexander Loke and Industry Fellow Sharon Craggs also participated in the symposium and facilitated break-out sessions.
