Assistant Professor Swati Jhaveri on the NUS’ Honour Roll for Sustained Excellence in Teaching

Assistant Professor Swati Jhaveri was placed on the National University of Singapore’s Honour Roll for Sustained Excellence in Teaching in 2018, having been awarded the University’s Annual Teaching Excellence Award on three prior occasions (2015, 2016 and 2017).

Of her teaching philosophy, Assistant Professor Swati said: “One of the fundamental components of my teaching philosophy involves encouraging active participation in all classes, whether large lectures or tutorials. Active participation contributes to an increased confidence in the study of law. It is difficult to make the transition to University and Law can be one of the most challenging degrees since students are introduced to subject matter they would not have had any exposure to in secondary school. Participating actively during class is critical to growing confidence. It allows students to test their thoughts in a more dynamic conversational manner; forces them to defend their positions in reaction to comments by others and improves their overall classroom and learning experience.”

Swati Jhaveri joined NUS Law as an Assistant Professor in August 2012. She teaches the Law of Torts and Constitutional and Administrative Law. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Jurisprudence (First Class Honours) and Bachelor of Civil Law (Distinction) from the University of Oxford and is currently a Doctor of Philosophy candidate at the same university. Prior to NUS Law, she was an Assistant Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong where she was awarded the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Exemplary Teaching. In her years at NUS Law, her articles have been published in Public Law, Tort Law Review, Singapore Journal of Legal Studies, Asian Journal of Comparative Law, Federal Law Review and International Journal of Constitutional Law (I-CON).
