Associate Professor Wang Jiangyu on BBC

Associate Professor and Deputy Director of the Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS) of the NUS Faculty of Law Wang Jiangyu was interviewed by Rico Hizon on BBC’s Newsday program on 9 September 2014 regarding the legitimacy of the claims of sovereignty by the People’s Republic of China over the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. The Spratly Islands are situated in a key shipping route and are surrounded by important natural resources.

Wang shared his views on China’s position in the Spratly Islands disputes from the perspective of international law and analysed the reasons for China’s reluctance to participate in an arbitration case initiated by The Philippines before the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague. He also talked about why China is reclaiming land to ‘build’ islands on the reefs in the area of the Spratly Islands.

Wang’s research interests spans a broad range of subjects that include international economic law, world trade law, Chinese corporate law and securities regulation and financial regulation in China.
