Benny Tan ’12 and Benjamin Wong ’15 appointed Sheridan Fellows

NUS Law is pleased to announce that Benny Tan ’12 and Benjamin Wong ’15 are the faculty’s newest Sheridan Fellows!

The fellowship is named after NUS Law’s Founding Dean Professor Lionel Astor (“Lee”) Sheridan, who played a key role in shaping the early years of legal education in Singapore and negotiating for professional recognition of local law graduates. The Sheridan Fellowship scheme was launched in 2014.

The successful candidates are appointed for two years, teaching half of the standard faculty workload, thus freeing up more time for the young scholars to work on their research. They each have at least one faculty mentor who will read and comment on their work as well as advise on publication avenues. This lays the foundation for a tenure-track position down the road. Sheridan Fellows may be sponsored for postgraduate studies at the end of the two years.

Benny Tan

Benny has served as Lecturer at NUS Law from July 2016 and prior to that as a Legal Skills Programme Instructor. He graduated from NUS Law in 2012 and was placed on the Dean’s List in his final undergraduate year. He then practised as a Deputy Public Prosecutor and State Counsel at the Attorney General’s Chambers.

He has published articles in both local and international journals, and his writings have been cited by the High Court and Court of Appeal of Singapore. He won the Best Feature Article prize awarded by the Law Society of Singapore for articles in the Law Gazette in 2015 and 2016, as well as the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award at NUS Law in 2017.

Benny has also been appointed by the Supreme Court to the Young Amicus Curiae panel (2016, 2017), where has been called upon to assist the courts in cases involving novel or complex issues of the law.

His research specialisation include criminal law (in particular sentencing law), and criminal evidence and procedural law.

Benjamin Wong

Benjamin graduated from NUS Law in 2015, and was placed on the Dean’s List for his final year. Among other achievements, he was a member of the champion team for the inaugural Herbert Smith Freehills Competition Law Moot, in which he was also awarded runner-up for Best Oralist.

After a stint in Drew & Napier LLC, Benjamin taught the Law of Contract at NUS Law as a Teaching Assistant. Prior to this, he also served as a Research Assistant at the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business, assisting in research on intellectual property law and competition law, among other subject areas.

Benjamin’s research interests include privacy and data protection law, which he will be co-teaching with Associate Professor David Tan from August 2018.
