This book is written with three principal goals in mind. First, it aims to distil and offer an authoritative synthesis of the key principles of criminal law in Singapore. Secondly, it seeks to identify issues (and nuances) in criminal law in Singapore for which the relevant principles are not so certain or which have yet to be clearly resolved, and for a number of such issues, to suggest the most appropriate way forward. Thirdly, it points out areas of criminal law in Singapore which are inextricably linked to other areas of criminal justice such as criminal procedure, assessment of evidence and sentencing law, so that the appropriate connections can be drawn.

Foundations of Criminal Law in Singapore focuses on the fundamental issues and topics of criminal law which are generally applicable across different offences. It covers topics such as the essential principles of statutory interpretation in Singapore, jurisdiction, physical and fault elements of a crime, concurrence, strict liability, the more commonly pleaded general and special defences, liability for attempts, abetment, criminal conspiracy, and common intention. Overall, the book strives to strike a good balance between being practice-oriented and offering intellectual and academic stimulation. It is written in a simple and reader-friendly manner.
