The Singapore International Mediation Institute (SIMI) celebrated the launch of Volume 7 in the Contemporary Issues in Mediation (CIIM) series on 28 October, with Professor Simon Chesterman, the Dean of NUS Law, in attendance as guest of honour, alongside other esteemed guests and essay authors.

Mr Alvin Sim, the Executive Director of SIMI, emceed the event, which featured a congratulatory speech by Professor Chesterman and a video speech by guest editor, Ms Josephine Hadikusumo, Managing Partner of CJ Liew & Co. After giving an overview of the 10 essays in CIIM Vol 7, Mr Sim invited the author of the winning essay, Mr Samuel Teo, to share the inspiration behind his work, which was based on a comparative study of Singapore and Australia’s mediation scene. Concluding the event was a book signing by CIIM Volume 7 editor, Professor Joel Lee.

The Book

Edited by Professor Joel Lee, Singapore’s leading expert on mediation and negotiation and Chairman of Singapore International Mediation Institute, CIIM Volume 7 contains 10 outstanding essays by students in tertiary institutions, especially those who are studying alternative dispute resolution modules and related skills-based topics. It is also co-edited by Marcus Lim, Country Manager (Singapore) for Lupl; and Ms Josephine Hadikusumo, Managing Partner of CJ Liew & Co.

CIIM Volume 7 features a diverse range of topics, with essays touching on the technicalities of mediation in various types of issues, such as victim-offender disputes in the community and inter-state armed disputes. Equally important, several are dedicated to the professional practice of mediation, involving topics such as “what is good faith in mediation”, “understanding the psyche of mediating parties” and “the unique skill sets mediators need”. Mediation is and will continue to be increasingly pertinent in the world of dispute resolution, and the book is a valuable addition to the growing body of dispute resolution literature, exploring the role of mediation in the post-pandemic era.
