Congratulations to the NUS Law team of Tan Fong Han ’20, Low Yin-Ing ’20, Violet Huang ’20, Felicia Ng ’21 and Sarah Lu ’21 for emerging as Champions of the 2019 Nuremberg Moot Court Competition.

Held in Nuremberg, Germany from 25 to 27 July 2019, the competition gave students the opportunity to refine their advocacy skills by competing on a fictitious case in international criminal law, presenting their arguments in the roles of Prosecution and Defense. This year’s competition case challenged the participants on the subject of enforced disappearances.

The international jury was made up of high-profile judges, prosecutors, and academics. Judge Ivana Hrdlicková (President, Special Tribunal for Lebanon) presided in the finals.

After advancing past the preliminary rounds as the second seed, the NUS team edged out formidable competition from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Monash University, Liceo de Cagayan University and Maastricht University to face off against Birzeit University from Palestine in the finals. Violet Huang also received the award for Best Overall Speaker.

With this victory, NUS joins Maastricht University as the only teams to have won the competition twice. The team would like to thank Associate Professor Lim Lei Theng ’92, Marcus Liew ’19, David Isidore Tan ’16, Victor Leong ’16, Hairul Hakkim ’16, Joshua Hiew ’17, Terence De Silva ’18, Pavithra Ramkumar ’18, Ayana Ki ’19, Darren Sim ’20 and Joel Sherard Chow ’20 for their guidance and support.
