Congratulations to our 2022 Justices’ Law Clerks!

We are pleased to announce that nine of our students from the Class of 2022 have been appointed as Justices’ Law Clerks (JLC) at the Singapore Supreme Court. First introduced in 1991 by former Chief Justice Yong Pung How, the JLC programme offers top young law graduates the opportunity to train under senior judges and gain valuable exposure to court perspectives. The JLC is a two-year programme of the Singapore Legal Service. Selected law graduates work with and train under the Chief Justice and other members of the Supreme Court Bench.

As JLCs, Wong Weitao, Arjit Pandey, Jordan Ng, Chong Fu Shan, Stanley Woo, Darryl Ong, Bay Jia Wei, Jonathan Goh and Valerie Lim from NUS Faculty of Law, will undertake legal research, draft bench memorandums and provide hearing-related assistance to Judges of the High Court and the Court of Appeal.

We congratulate them for having earned their places in the JLC programme with outstanding academic and extra-curricular achievements.

Weitao was awarded the Adrian Clark Memorial Medal and Singapore Academy of Law Prize as the top student in AY21/22. He was placed on the Dean’s List in his third and fourth year, as well as the Overall Dean’s List. In his final year, he won the Clifford Chance Prize in International Commercial Arbitration, the Prize in Aviation Law, the Helmsman Singapore Prize in Maritime Law, the Maritime Law Association of Singapore Prize in Carriage of Goods by Sea, and the Maritime Law Association of Singapore Prize in Charterparties. In AY20/21, he was awarded the M Karthigesu Memorial Prize as the top student in Admiralty Law & Practice and Maritime Conflict of Laws. Weitao also received the NUS Law Pro Bono Special Recognition Award and Outstanding Court Volunteer (Student Category) Award for his involvement in the State Courts Student Representatives Programme.

Arjit was awarded the K&L Gates Straits Law Prize in Legal Analysis, Research & Communication in 2019. He was a recipient of the HL Wee Scholarship in AY19/20 and the A&G Scholarship in his third and fourth year. Arjit participated in several moot competitions. He was the champion in the Gowling WLG IP Moot 2019, the Dentons Rodyk Moot 2019, and Lex Infinitum 2020. He was also a member of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition team where they emerged as finalists in the Global Rounds in 2021. Arjit has recently completed his Master of Laws degree at New York University.

Jordan was placed on the Dean’s List for all four years of the LLB programme and was awarded the Law Society of Singapore Prize for Top 2 Students in AY19/20. He was also awarded several subject prizes, such as the K&L Gates Straits Law Prize in Legal Analysis, Research & Communication, the Allen & Gledhill Prize in Company Law, the Lai Kew Chai Prize in Equity & Trusts, and The Punch Coomaraswamy Prize in The Law of Evidence. Jordan recently completed his Master of Laws at Erasmus University Rotterdam, graduating as the best performing student.

Jia Wei was placed on the Dean’s List in AY18/19, AY21/22 and overall Dean’s List, and was also a recipient of the highest-tier NUS Global Merit Scholarship. She represented Singapore and NUS Law in several moot competitions, most notably in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, the world’s oldest, largest, and most prestigious international moot, where her team emerged as finalists. In a unanimous decision by three sitting judges on the International Court of Justice, Jia Wei received the Stephen M. Schwebel Award for Best Oralist of the World Championship Round. Jia Wei also served as Deputy Chief Editor of the Singapore Law Review, Asia’s oldest student-run legal publication.

Jonathan graduated with double first-class honours from the Double Degree Programme in Law and Economics from NUS Law and NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He has been placed on the Dean’s List multiple times and won subject prizes such as the Gower Prize for Company Law and the Lai Kew Chai Prize in Equity & Trusts. Jonathan was also an active student leader in hall where he served as a Peer Mentor and cared for the mental, social, and academic well-being of residents staying in his cluster. He also led and participated in various community development projects around South-East Asia, where he was part of a team that brought clean water access to a remote village in northern Vietnam.

Valerie was awarded the Koh Han Kok Prize for Public International Law, the Singapore Mediation Centre Prize, the I.R.B. Law Prize in Trial Advocacy and graduated on the overall Dean’s List, having placed on the Dean’s List every year. In 2022. She represented NUS Law in the Leiden-Sarin International Air Law Moot Court Competition 2021, and emerged as 1st Runner-up in the CMS Intellectual Property Moot 2022.

Darryl was placed on the Dean’s List for three consecutive years as well as the Overall Dean’s List. He took part in the International Commercial Arbitration Moot 2020, where he emerged as runner-up. In his final year, he read his Master of Laws in Transnational Law at King’s College London, where he topped the International Criminal Law and Public International Law modules.

Stanley was awarded the Tan Sook Yee Prize in Property Law as well as the Lim Chong Kin Prize for Competition Law & Policy. He was placed on the Dean’s List for three years and was on the overall Dean’s List for the LLB. Programme. He actively represented NUS Law in multiple international moot court competitions, emerging as Champions on two occasions – the 24th Stetson Environmental Moot Court Competition in 2020 (Southeast Asian Regional Rounds) and the 8th Herbert Smith Freehills Competition Law Moot in 2022.

Fu Shan graduated on the Overall Dean’s List, having placed on the Dean’s List every year. In addition, he won the Bernard Brown Prize in Constitutional & Administrative Law, the Yong Heng Kin Prize in Law of Contract, and the Lai Kew Chai Prize in Equity & Trusts. Fu Shan also represented NUS Law and achieved commendable results in competitions such as the IASLA Space Law Moot, the Qatar International Cybersecurity Moot, and the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. As the Project Director for the LEAP initiative, he volunteered with youth-at-risk for two years and is now involved with another project that aims to help caregivers of mentally incapacitated individuals.
