Dean Chesterman Takes on Barista Role

March 2, 2016 | Faculty

In the run up to this year’s Law IV musical fundraiser, Dean Simon Chesterman accepted a challenge from the Law IV students: if they raised S$10,000 for their designated charity, the Autism Resource Centre, Professor Chesterman would work the “kopi” station (coffee station) at the Summit canteen for an hour.

As it turns out, the students raised S$28,000, and so from 12 to 1pm on 2 March, Professor Chesterman was kept busy making local favourites like “kopi, kopi-o, teh-C peng kosong”, and some elaborate orders. Providing helpful advice to Dean Chesterman from behind the counter was Belson Eng, the canteen’s resident coffee making expert. The queue for drinks that day stretched out the door, with colleagues and students alike eager for a special cup of drink made by the Dean.

Professor Chesterman who clearly enjoyed the experience said: “Thanks to Belson Eng for being such a good sport, our Tort lawyers for their helpful warnings about potential liability issues, and one of my colleagues for arriving as my last order and requesting a “yuan yang poh siew dai peng – take away”.
