Highlights of NUS Law Open Day 2016

NUS Law welcomed over 750 visitors to the Bukit Timah Campus for Open Day on 12 March 2016. Taking place on the same day as the NUS Open Day at UTown, the event at Bukit Timah Campus was organised for students interested in finding out more about the law faculty’s academic programme, student life and its surroundings.

The excitement and energy that filled the campus was infectious, as student volunteers took visitors on campus tours, introduced them to the various aspects of student life and shared their own personal experiences as NUS Law students. The programme also gave potential students and their parents a chance to interact with the faculty at the Dean’s Talk and the Professor-Student Panel Discussion.

Dean Simon Chesterman started off his talk by asking students to carefully consider why they want to study law and examining their motivation for choosing law as a career. “Ask yourself who you want to be, not just what you want to be” was the Dean’s advice. He fielded several questions from the audience about aptitude to study law, student life at the Bukit Timah Campus, the international student exchange programme and admissions criteria during the Q&A that followed.

The Professor-Student Panel Discussion was an opportunity to have a dialogue with current students, alumni and professors. This year’s panel comprised Assoc Prof David Tan, Vice Dean( Academic Affairs), Assoc Prof Eleanor Wong, Vice Dean (Student Affairs) and Asst Prof Swati Jhaveri, who were joined by Afzal Ali, Justices’ Law Clerk at the Supreme Court of Singapore, Liu Guiliang, president of the Law Club, and Ryo Yap, chairperson of the Freshman Orientation Central Committee (FOCC) 2016. The panel fielded a range of questions from the audience who went away with greater insight into student life and the academic experience NUS Law offers. The students were particularly delighted to receive both ”romantic” and “realist” perspectives on pursuing a career in the law.

An annual highlight of NUS Law Open Day at the Bukit Timah Campus is the Moot Court demonstration organised by NUS Law students. Both sessions were standing-room-only as visitors had a rare opportunity to experience a courtroom setup and witness the mechanics of a mock trial. The demonstration included an examination in chief, cross examination, and opening and closing statements from both the prosecution and defendants.
