Highlights of Open Day 2017

NUS Law welcomed about 700 visitors to the Bukit Timah Campus for Open Day on 11 March 2017. Running concurrently with the NUS Open Day at UTown, the law faculty opened its doors to students interested in finding out more about the academic programme, student life and its surroundings.

Enthusiastic visitors were met by student volunteers who took them around the campus and filled them in on the various aspects of life as a law student.
The programme also gave potential students and their parents a chance to interact with the faculty at the Dean’s Talk and the Professor-Student Panel Discussion.

Speaking to parents and potential law students, Dean Simon Chesterman urged students to carefully consider why they want to study law and examine their motivation for choosing law as a career. “Ask yourself who you want to be, not just what you want to be” was the Dean’s advice. He fielded several questions from the audience about aptitude to study law, student life at the Bukit Timah Campus, the international student exchange programme and admissions criteria during the Q&A that followed.

The Professor-Student Panel Discussion was an opportunity to have a dialogue with current students, alumni and professors. This year’s panel comprised Assoc Prof David Tan, Vice Dean( Academic Affairs), Assoc Prof Eleanor Wong, Vice Dean (Student Affairs) and Asst Prof Swati Jhaveri, who were joined by Kenneth Wang Ye, Justices’ Law Clerk at the Supreme Court of Singapore, Ryo Yap, president of the Law Club, and Benedict Tedjopranoto, chairperson of the Freshman Orientation Central Committee (FOCC) 2017. The panel fielded a range of questions from the audience who went away with greater insight into student life and the academic experience NUS Law offers.

One of the much anticipated highlights of the NUS Law Open Day is the Moot Court demonstration organised by NUS Law students. Both sessions were standing-room-only as visitors had a rare opportunity to experience a courtroom setup and witness the mechanics of a mock trial. The demonstration included an examination in chief, cross examination, and opening and closing statements from both the prosecution and defendants.
