Highlights of Open Day 2018

NUS Law opened its doors to welcome about 500 visitors to its Bukit Timah Campus on 10 March 2018. The annual Law Open Day event runs concurrently with the NUS Open Day at UTown. Students visiting the campus get to find out more about the academic programme, student life and to experience this historic campus for themselves. 

Visitors were greeted by student volunteers who took them on tours around the campus and filled them in on the various aspects of life as a law student. The programme also gave potential students and their parents a chance to interact with the faculty at the Dean’s Talk and the Professor-Student Panel Discussion. At the information rooms, NUS Law staff gave advice on admission procedures and our academic programme. They also answered queries about our exciting student exchange programmes and about future career options.

Speaking to parents and potential law students, Dean Simon Chesterman asked students to think about why they want to study law and their motivation for choosing a law career in the future. He highlighted alumni who have gone on to have successful careers in the law like Sundaresh Menon ’86 the current Chief Justice, and Rachel Eng ’91 the Deputy Chairman of WongPartnership LLP. He also talked about alumni who went on to successful careers outside the law, like Tan Min-Liang ’02, CEO of technology company, Razer, who was recently in the news for being listed on Forbes’ annual ranking of the world’s billionaires for the first time.

NUS Law sets itself apart from other law schools with its broad elective curriculum. Associate Professor David Tan, Vice Dean (Academic Affairs) in his briefing, highlighted the wide variety of electives that students can choose from – from Mergers & Acquisitions to International Space Law. He also spoke about the special options of combining the study of law with other subjects (e.g. Economics, Life Sciences) in the double degree programme or by adding electives from other faculties to obtain a Minor. He also discussed NUS Law’s Exchange Plus programme which allows students to graduate in 4 years with an LL.B. from NUS and the equivalent of an LL.M. from one of six universities, such as NYU, King’s College London, Melbourne and Toronto.

Vice Dean David Tan then facilitated the Professor-Student Panel Discussion session, which gave potential students the opportunity to have a dialogue with current students, alumni and professors. This year’s panel comprised Associate Professor David Tan, Associate Professor Eleanor Wong, Vice Dean (Student Affairs) and Assistant Professor Swati Jhaveri, who were joined by Kenneth Wang Ye ’16, Justices’ Law Clerk at the Supreme Court of Singapore, Lim Jun Heng ’20, president of the Law Club, and Sia Bao Huei ’21, chairperson of the Freshman Orientation Central Committee (FOCC) 2018. The panel fielded a range of questions from the audience who went away with greater insight into student life and the academic experience NUS Law offers. 

An annual highlight of NUS Law Open Day is the Moot Court demonstration organised by the NUS Law Mooting and Debating Club. Both sessions were packed as visitors had a rare opportunity to experience a courtroom setup and witness the mechanics of a mock trial. The first session at 1.30pm was on Commercial Arbitration and the second at 5pm was on International Law. The demonstration included an examination in chief, cross examination, and opening and closing statements from both the prosecution and defendants.

Admissions for “A” level holders closes on 19 March 2018.
