Joseph Lau LLM ’19 and Timothy Chan ’18 appointed Sheridan Fellows

July 20, 2022

NUS Law is pleased to announce that Joseph Lau LLM ’19 and Timothy Chan ’18 are the faculty’s newest Sheridan Fellows!

The fellowship is named after NUS Law’s Founding Dean Professor Lionel Astor (“Lee”) Sheridan, who played a key role in shaping the early years of legal education in Singapore and negotiating for professional recognition of local law graduates. The Sheridan Fellowship scheme was launched in 2014.

The successful candidates are appointed for two years, teaching half of the standard faculty workload, thus freeing up more time for the young scholars to work on their research. They each have at least one faculty mentor who will read and comment on their work as well as advise on publication avenues. This lays the foundation for a tenure-track position down the road. Sheridan Fellows may be sponsored for postgraduate studies at the end of the two years.

Joseph Lau

Joseph graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford in 2013 and completed his Master of Laws (Intellectual Property & Technology Law), from NUS Law in 2019.

Joseph is appointed as a Sheridan Fellow and also holds appointments as an Academic Fellow at the Centre for Technology, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and the Law (TRAIL) and as Faculty Advisor for Alt+law, a student interest group focused on legaltech. His research interests lie in the fields of copyright and patent law and his work in these areas has been published by leading local and international journals, including the Singapore Academy of Law Journal, the Australian Intellectual Property Journal and the Intellectual Property Quarterly.

Prior to assuming his current appointment, Joseph was a teaching assistant at NUS for the Law of Torts module. He continues to assist with the teaching of this module at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Timothy Chan

Timothy graduated with a First Class Honours from NUS Law in 2018 and received a number of academic prizes along the way. After practising for several years in the disputes team of a large law firm, he joined NUS Law in 2021 and presently teaches Property Law and Equity & Trusts. His research interests lie in the fields of property law, equity & trusts, and their intersection with digital assets.
