Landing that Dream Job

The NUS Career Centre@Law has organised a pair of workshops on 16 October 2013 and 18 October 2013 discussing the common pitfalls and best practices when it comes to the job application process.

Speaking on the first day, Ms Ng Lay-Hoon, Senior Manager of Human Resources and Legal at the recruitment consultancy Michael Page, gave an insightful presentation on the finer intricacies involved in crafting a well-rounded resume. She illustrated how students can add more ‘meat’ to their resumes and cover letters, and explained why such enhanced resumes tend to have a winning edge in the competitive job market.

“The delivery by the speaker from Michael Page was incisive and insightful. Her responses to the questions posed throughout the session were substantial and practical, fully addressing my queries on resume writing,” says LL.B. student Sheng Hongbin.

In the second workshop conducted by lawyers from Jones Day, students were exposed to valuable pointers regarding job interviews with potential employers.

Acting out many of the common mistakes applicants make, the presenters gave examples of what a good or a bad interview is through a series of mock sessions in which they took turns to play the role of either the interviewer or interviewee.

LL.M. student Gaurav Jit Singh felt “the recruiting partners from Jones Day provided unique insights on what they look for when it comes to hiring the best talents, beyond just the academic achievements. It was very useful to know that listing your personal interest in a resume is important as it acts as an ice-breaker in the interviews.”
