Moots Spotlight: March 2019

One of the valuable educational experiences an NUS Law student can have is to represent the university in mooting competitions. Here some of our students’ recent achievements.

Best Overall Team at INTA Asia-Pacific Moot Court Competition

The NUS Law team comprising Rachel Chan ’21, Michelle Chua ’21, Sean Sin Siong ’22, and Samuel Teo ’21 clinched the Best Overall Team, Best Oral Arguments, and Best Brief prizes at the INTA Asia-Pacific Moot Court Competition.

The competition was held at the SMU School of Economics and Social Sciences on 1 to 2 March, and saw 23 teams from seven countries including Czech Republic, India and Philippines participating.

The team of Bryan Ong ’22, Sim Wai Kit ’22, Tan Shao Wei ’22, and Zhang Weihao ’22 also clinched Second Best Overall Team.

Strong Performance at International Commercial Arbitration Moot

NUS Law students participated in the Finals of the WongPartnership International Commercial Arbitration Moot 2019 held on 4 March 2019. Nikhil Angappan ’21 and Rebecca Loo ’21 appeared for the Claimants while Chin Ming Fwu ’22 and Nur Liyana Binte Kamaludin (SMU Law School) appeared for the Respondents.

The competition was judged by Professor Lucy Reed (Director (Centre for International Law), NUS Law), Professor Lawrence Boo ’80 (Head of Chambers, The Arbitration Chambers) and Mr. Andre Maniam SC ’90 (Partner, WongPartnership LLP).

Nur Liyana Binte Kamaludin emerged Champion, followed by First Runner-up Rebecca Loo ’21, and Second Runners-up Chin Ming Fwu ’22 and Nikhil Angappan ’21. All four will be awarded internships at WongPartnership and cash prizes.

Victory at International Negotiation Competition National Round

NUS Law placed first in the inaugural National Round of the International Negotiation Competition 2019 held at SMU Law School on 16 March 2019. The team of Kimberley Pah ’19 and Levin Lin ’20 will represent Singapore at the International Negotiation Competition in Tokyo in July 2019.

Runners-up at Jean-Pictet Competition

The NUS Law team of Eden Low ’20, Gina Ding ’19 and Carol Yuen ’19 emerged Joint First Runners-up at the Jean-Pictet Competition 2019.

Jean-Pictet Competition is a unique international humanitarian law moot competition that focuses on taking the law out of the books. It encompasses simulations and role play built around a fictitious armed conflict. This year’s competition was held in Obernai, France from 16 to 23 March 2019.

The team faced strong competition from 48 teams across the globe, including the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights and the US Air Force Academy.

Clean-sweep Victory at Advocacy Cup

NUS Law students dominated the Advocacy Cup 2019 in an all-NUS final. Samuel Wittberger ’21 emerged as the Overall Champion, followed by First Runner-up Nikhil Angappan ’21 and Second Runners-up Nicholas Chia ’21 and Ho Linming ’20.

Held on 27 March 2019, this year’s competition was conducted in the form of mock criminal trials and was judged by Justice Vinodh Coomaraswamy (Supreme Court of Singapore), Mr Jimmy Yim SC ’82 LL.M. ’90 (Chairman, Drew & Napier LLC) and Professor Tan Cheng Han SC ’87 (NUS Law).

Regional Champions at Manfred Lachs Moot Court Competition Asia Pacific Regional Rounds

The NUS Law team of Dorcas Ong ’21, Lim Jia Ren ’21 and Ong Kye Jing ’21 emerged Champions at the 2019 Manfred Lachs Moot Court Competition Asia Pacific Regional Rounds. Dorcas was named Best Oralist (Finals) and Jia Ren also received Best Oralist (Preliminary Rounds).

Held at Amity University, India, from 28 March to 31 March, the moot focuses on international space law. This year’s moot problem concerned the ownership of a lunar facility on the moon and liability for damages in outer space.

Competing against 47 other teams across Asia, the team beat out strong teams from Australia, China and Hong Kong to emerge as Champions of the Asia Pacific Region – and will represent the region at the World Finals held at Washington D.C. in October 2019.

Second Runner-up at Ian Fletcher International Insolvency Law Moot

The NUS Law team comprising Glenn Sim ’19, Uma Sharma ’19, Sheryl Tan ’19 and Ryan Kwan ’20 emerged Second Runner-up at the 2019 Ian Fletcher International Insolvency Law Moot held on 29 to 31 March. The team qualified as the top seed for the knock-out rounds and was awarded the Highest Ranked Team in the Preliminary Rounds. It edged out competition from universities from India, France, and Serbia before bowing out in the semi-finals.
