NUS Law Tops Asia-Pacific Rounds of IASLA Space Moot 2017

NUS Law congratulates Serene Chee ’19, Uma Sharma ’19, Low Ee Ning ’19 and Seah Ern Xu ’19 for emerging as Champions in the Asia-Pacific Regional Rounds of the International Air and Space Law Academy (IASLA) Space Moot Competition 2017. The team also received the Best Memorial prize. This is the third time that NUS Law has emerged as Champions in the Asia-Pacific round.

After four intensely fought preliminary rounds, NUS Law edged out several teams from the region, such as Hong Kong University and Gujarat National Law University, to speak in the final round. The round was held at The Banco Court, New South Wales Supreme Court, an unforgettable privilege for the team. After a nail-biting and close fought final round against the Australian National University, the team emerged victorious.

As said by Serene Chee ’19, “There’s nothing like delving into an area of law so foreign to so many, traversing hidden corners of the library – and being so pleasantly surprised to find that there are many out there who still go out of their way to learn about outer space.”

The competition was certainly an eye-opener for the team and enabled them to get a glimpse of other mooting styles and techniques. The 2017 moot problem included claims for damaged satellites, jamming of direct television broadcast signals and remote sensing activities, amongst other issues, requiring a firm grounding in public international law and outer space law.
