NUS Law welcomes visiting faculty – AY 2026/2027 Semester 1

NUS Law is delighted to welcome the following visiting faculty for AY 2026/2027, Semester 1:

Phase 1

Professor Howard Bennett, Sat Pal Khattar Visiting Professor; Professor Devika Hovell, Kwa Geok Choo Visiting Professor; Professor Thomas Poole, Tan Ah Tah Visiting Professor; Professor Andrew Schwartz; Associate Professor Gilad Abiri; and Associate Professor Marie-Louise Holle.

The professors in Phase 1 were introduced to the NUS Law family at the Start of Term Welcome Lunch, which took place at the Multi-Purpose Hall on 12 August 2026.

At the Welcome Lunch, faculty members took turns to introduce the visiting professors, offering details on their illustrious background and anecdotes to break the ice. Amid the informal lunch setting, the atmosphere was convivial, with much cheerful conversation.

Phase 1:

Professor Howard Bennett (Trade Finance Law)

Professor Howard Bennett’s research and teaching interests lie in shipping and maritime law, insurance law (with a particular interest in marine insurance law), the law of international trade finance, general contract law, personal property law, and the law of agency.

He is the author of The Law of Marine Insurance (second edition, 2006) and Principles of the Law of Agency (second edition, 2024); and on the authorial teams of Carver on Charterparties (third edition, 2024) (also general editor), Vulnerable Transactions in Corporate Insolvency (2003) (also co-editor), Benjamin’s Sale of Goods (12th edition, 2023), and Scrutton on Charterparties and Bills of Lading (25th edition, 2024).

Professor Devika Hovell (The Use of Force in International Law)

Professor Devika Hovell is Professor of Public International Law at the London School of Economics, specialising in international criminal law, Security Council practice and procedure, sanctions, international dispute resolution and the law relating to the use of force.

She has published widely in leading journals, including the European Journal of International Law, American Journal of International Law, Modern Law Review, British Yearbook of International Law, and Current Legal Problems. Her book, The Power of Process, explores the value of due process in Security Council sanctions decision-making.

Professor Thomas Poole (Law and State Power)

Professor Thomas Poole is a Professor of Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2006. His research interests include constitutional and administrative law, legal and political theory, foreign relations law, constitutional history, law and empire, and the history of political thought. He is the author of Reason of State: Law, Prerogative and Empire (2015) and co-editor of volumes on Hobbes and the Law (2012), Law, Liberty and State: Oakeshott, Hayek and Schmitt on the Rule of Law (2015) and The Double-Facing Constitution: Legal Externalities and the Reshaping of Constitutional Order (2019).

Associate Professor Gilad Abiri (Law in the Information Age)

Dr Gilad Abiri is an Associate Professor of Law at Peking University School of Transnational Law (STL) and a Visiting Fellow at the Information Society Project at Yale Law School. Before starting at STL, he was a Lecturer in Law at Yale Law School and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Macmillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale University. He also spent a year as a Global Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Law and Philosophy in NYU Law.

Associate Professor Marie-Louise Holle (Civil Law in a Global Perspective)

Dr Marie-Louise Holle is an Associate Professor at the Department of Business Humanities and Law, Copenhagen Business School. Dr Holle’s research focuses on torts, contracts and climate litigation from both private and public law perspectives.

Dr Holle is a member of the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law Peer Review Network at Columbia University Law School. Her research in climate litigation is a continuation of her long research in liability, torts and litigation. She is also a Sabin Center rapporteur for four French-speaking as well as English-speaking jurisdictions (Madagascar, Monaco, Namibia and the Seychelles).

Professor Andrew Schwartz (Startup Finance)

Professor Andrew Schwartz joined the Colorado Law faculty in 2008 and was named the Laurence W. DeMuth Chair of Business Law in 2024. He teaches and publishes on corporate, securities and contract law, and has become an internationally recognised expert on investment crowdfunding. In 2017, Professor Schwartz served as a Fulbright Research Scholar at the University of Auckland Law School in New Zealand, where he regularly returns as a Visiting Professor.
