NUS Law wins Inaugural Blackoak Transactional Competition

May 15, 2017 | Student

NUS Law has emerged as champions at the inaugural Blackoak Transactional Competition! The team comprised of Lee Shao Xun ’19, Daryl Tan Wei Jie ’19, Marcel Wong Liang Kun ’19 and Joseph Lim Weisheng ’19. Lee Shao Xun also clinched the Best Oralist Award.

The Blackoak Transactional Competition 2017, which took place on 15 May 2017, is the first of its kind in Singapore as teams sought to tackle the challenges of insolvency in a five-way negotiation. The competition required the various teams to negotiate for the rescue of a beleaguered airline on the brink of insolvency due to liquidity difficulties and several public relation disasters. Commercial realism was heavily emphasised as teams sought to formulate a rescue plan which was mutually beneficial for all stakeholders present, including creditors and shareholders.

The judges in the grand finals were reputed professionals in the field of Corporate, Contract and Insolvency Law – Mr Ashok Kumar of Blackoak LLC, as well as Associate Professor Goh Yihan and Associate Professor Stephen Bull of SMU School of Law.

The team would like to express its gratitude to Mr Benjamin Foo ’15 for his invaluable guidance and support.
