NUS Law Wins Second Tun Suffian International Human Rights Moot

The NUS Law team comprising Abhishek Srivastava ’21, Choo Qian Ke ’21, Ng Wei Qi ’21 and Stella Lee Hyun Jo ’21 emerged as Champions of the Tun Suffian International Human Rights Moot Court Competition 2019. This is NUS Law’s second consecutive victory in the competition that is held biennially.

Held from 16 to 17 November at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the team competed against teams from Malaysia, Japan, China and Vietnam during the preliminary rounds. After a tough fight, the team edged out the Royal University of Law and Economics of Cambodia in the semi-finals.

In the finals, the team appeared before a distinguished panel of judges comprising Tan Sri Dato’ Mohamad Ariff bin Md Yusof, present Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Malaysian Parliament and former Malaysian Court of Appeal Judge; YAA Datuk David Wong Dak Wah, present Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak; and Dato’ Seri Mohd Hishamudin Md Yunus, former Malaysian Court of Appeal Judge. After a round of intense competition, the team eventually defeated the University of Malaya to clinch the championship. Abhishek also received the Best Oralist award.

The team would like to thank Ryan Kwan ’20 for his dedication and support throughout the process leading up to the competition. The team would also like to express its gratitude to Seah Ern Xu ’19, Ryo Yap ’19, Glenn Sim ’19, Uma Sharma ’19, Adeline Tan ’20, Fiona Ng ’20 and Rachel Ang ’20 for their assistance during the preparations. Lastly, the team would like to thank Associate Professor Lim Lei Theng ’92 for providing them with the opportunity to participate in the competition, and for her guidance and support.
