NUS Law wins the 20th Intercollegiate Negotiation Competition (INC) Sophia 2021!

Held on 6 and 7 of November 2021, the 20th Intercollegiate Negotiation Competition Sophia saw participation from Asian law schools across countries such as Japan, Australia, and Thailand amongst other countries. Comprising of both an arbitration and negotiation component, this competition problem required the teams to resolve several dispute based on the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (UPICC) and UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules.

After two days of arbitration and negotiation, the NUS contingent was crowned overall champions and received the prestigious Sumitomo Competition Award. Additionally, the contingent received the CIArb Award as the university contingent with the highest total points in the arbitration component.

The students benefited largely from the experience. Not only did they learn more about the different laws that governed arbitration proceedings, their perspectives of international dispute resolution were also broadened from interacting with professors and students from other Asian law schools as well as judges who are esteemed practising lawyers.

The team would like to express their immense gratitude to Jeriel Teo ’24 and Samuel Wee ’24 (INC Sophia Champions 2020) for coaching the team while preparing for their own moots and exams. Their time and advice were invaluable to the team’s growth and learning. The team is also grateful for Samuel Teo ’21, Nikhil Angappan ’21, Jeremy Teo ’21, Edwin Chan ’24 and Kaezeel Yeo ’24 for the benching sessions and for helping the team to fly the NUS flag high once again.
