NUS Pro Bono Group and ALSA Singapore hold inaugural Pro Bono Conference for students
The NUS Pro Bono Group (PBG) and the Asian Law Students’ Association (ALSA) Singapore organised the inaugural Law Students’ Pro Bono Conference from 1 to 4 July 2019. Held at the NUS Bukit Timah Campus, the conference aims to promote and advance the spirit of pro bono amongst law students in the region. As the first student-organised pro bono conference held regionally, it provided law students with an interactive platform to share about their pro bono experiences.
The conference was attended by 61 pro bono enthusiasts from Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan and Thailand. Over four days, participants explored and analysed pro bono topics through panel and table discussions. Nineteen pro bono advocates from Singapore and the international legal community graced the event, sharing their insights with the participants.
Participants were also encouraged to identify legal issues relevant to their jurisdictions and generate ideas to incubate impactful and sustainable pro bono projects. The table discussions fostered cross-border sharing and creative brainstorming on ways to improve access to justice for beneficiaries including migrant workers and youth-at-risk. Looking to the future, the NUS PBG will be continuing discussions with the participating universities on ways to collaborate.
NUS PBG and ALSA Singapore would like to thank their event sponsors Gloria James-Civetta & Co, DLA Piper and Latham & Watkins.
