NUS Professor Receives President’s Volunteerism & Philanthropy Award

NUS Law congratulates Assoc Prof Chan Wing Cheong on being awarded the President’s Volunteerism & Philanthropy Award (PVPA). Organised by the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (NVPC), with support from the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY), the awards honour those who have set benchmarks of excellence in encouraging the spirit of giving.

Driven by a sense of social justice and a desire to see improvements in the lives of the less privileged, Assoc Prof Chan serves the community in numerous roles. Keen on helping young people find their path in life, he has been a Volunteer Probation Officer and a small group leader to the boys from the boys’ home, and helped male juvenile delinquents pass their probationary stay in the home. For his public service as a Gazetted Volunteer Probation Officer, he was conferred an award by the then Ministry of Community Development in 1999. He also serves on the Adult Protection Team which works on solutions to address issues like granting social workers access to intervene on behalf of the elderly if they are being abused by their caregivers.

He has relentlessly championed the cause for gender equality, child protection and various social issues through papers and talks. His thought leadership articles, which have ignited discussions on caring for the disadvantaged, have been published in books, journals and in the mainstream media.

Assoc Prof Chan Wing Cheong teaches Criminal Law and Family Law at NUS Law, and his research interests include Child Law and Elder Law.
