Our alumna, Justice Judith Prakash, appointed to the National University of Singapore Board of Trustees

April 2, 2024 | Faculty

The National University of Singapore has welcomed three new members to its Board of Trustees on 1 April 2024. Among them is our distinguished alumna, Justice Judith Prakash.

Appointed by the Minister for Education, the Board has 20 members and is made up of eminent leaders from the public sector, academia, business and various professions. The Board works closely with the University’s management and stakeholders to shape its vision, chart major directions and guide significant initiatives to produce a strong and enduring impact for the University, for Singapore and beyond.

Justice Prakash graduated from the University of Singapore in 1974. Before her judicial career, she was an advocate and solicitor in Singapore, starting out as a shipping lawyer, subsequently practising commercial law in the areas of banking and finance and company law. She joined the Supreme Court as Judicial Commissioner in 1992 and became a High Court Judge in 1995.

Justice Prakash was the first woman to be appointed a permanent judge of Singapore’s Court of Appeal in 2016. Until 2022, Justice Prakash was the Lead Judge for arbitration matters. Her judgments, particularly on arbitration and commercial law, have had significant influence both domestically and internationally. Beyond her expertise in arbitration, her areas of interest include family law and trusts, as well as banking, finance, and shipping and insurance law.

Justice Prakash retired in December 2023 and returned as Senior Judge in January 2024. She also sits on the Boards of Trustees of the Singapore Indian Development Association and The Eurasian Association.

The other two appointees are also NUS alumni — Mr Tan Chong Meng, former Group Chief Executive of PSA International; and Mr Ravi Menon, former Managing Director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

Welcoming the new appointees, Mr Hsieh Fu Hua, Chairman of the NUS Board of Trustees, said: “Their breadth and depth of experience will enrich board discussions and bring useful perspectives to guide the growth of the University amid a fast-changing and challenging environment.”

As part of the Board’s renewal, three non-executive members – Ambassador-at-Large Prof Chan Heng Chee, veteran social worker Dr Sudha Nair, and Allen and Gledhill partner Mr Andrew Lim Ming-Hui – have retired from the Board on 31 March 2024.
