NUS Law recorded its first-ever regional victory in the Southeast Asian round of the 23rd Annual Stetson International Environmental Moot Court Competition, held from 8 to 10 January 2019 at the University of the Philippines, College of Law in Diliman, Quezon City.

The team of Jiang Zhifeng ’23, Clara Low Puay Cheng ’22, Pranay Suryavanshi ’19 and Isabella Tan ’21 went up against the incumbent champion University of Philippines in the finals, finishing champions for the first time and clinching 2nd Best Memo in the competition.

As champions, they will participate in the International Finals that will be held in April 2019 at Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport, Florida. They will be joined by the team of Lim Sze Yuan ’21, See Wern Hao ’21, Mazie Tan ’20 and Wee Su-ann ’21 who also qualified as semi-finalists.

A total of 14 teams from Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin and North America participated in this year’s regional rounds and this is the first time that two teams from NUS Law will compete in the finals.

The Annual Stetson International Environmental Moot Court Competition is an international environmental law moot – and this year’s moot problem was centered around the harvesting of Sargassum and its impact on the European Eel.

“The feeling is surreal,” said Isabella. “It is the first time participating in an international moot competition for the majority of the team. The level of competition was amazing and when we heard that we were champions of the regional round, we were shocked! We feel extremely blessed and thankful for everyone who supported and guided us all the way.”

Both teams would like to thank Chin Jincheng ’13, Rachel Tan ’17, Kiu Yan Yu ’18, Ong Chee Yeow ’18, Charlotte Wang ’18, Daniel Fong ’19, Josh Foo ’19, Law May Ning ’19, Mark Lim ’19, Marcus Liew ’19, Joshua Phang ’19, Joel Sherard Chow ’20, Abigail Fong ’20, Lucas Lim ’20, Fiona Ng ’20, Phoon Wuei ’20, Darren Sim ’20 and Elizabeth Teoh ’20 for their guidance and support.

The teams would also like to thank Associate Professor Lim Lei Theng ’92 for her guidance and support.
