Runners-up at 17th Intercollegiate Negotiation Competition in Tokyo

The NUS Law team of Brenan Mah ’21, Brendan Tan ’21, Dikaios Pang ’21, Jeremy Teo ’21 and Tan Yann Xu ’21 finished second in the 17th Intercollegiate Negotiation Competition (INC), held in Tokyo from 1 to 2 December 2018.

Organised by Sophia University, the competition simulated an international commercial context between two firms dealing across borders, with the dispute arising under a contract governed by the UNIDROIT Principles for International Commercial Contracts.

There were two aspects to the competition, an arbitration and a negotiation component, where teams represented one of two corporations involved in a dispute over a sales purchase agreement.

Despite all the other teams gaining a five-point advantage for sending both an English and Japanese team, and facing strong competition from the eventual winners Team Australia, who were aided by over 20 members in research and preparation, the NUS Law team of five earned high praise from the judges and were commended for showing similar strengths displayed by previous participating teams from NUS Law.
