Second-place finish in ICC Australia APAC Commercial Mediation Competition

Congratulations to Isabella Tan ’21, Joelle Loy ’20, Darren Wong ’21 and Darryl Lau ’21 on finishing second in the 2019 International Chamber of Commerce Australia Asia-Pacific Commercial Mediation Competition that took place from 26 to 28 July 2019.

Held at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, the team faced off against teams from Australia, India and New Zealand before competing against the University of Auckland in the finals.

Based on international commercial disputes, the competition allows university students to gain valuable skills in mediation, an essential area of dispute resolution in international commercial law. This year’s competition included issues of inter alia, intellectual property rights, unjust enrichment, breach of contract, illegality and the international sale of goods. Through this competition, students learned to effectively combine the use of mediation and collaborative problem-solving skills to represent parties’ interests and progress towards a settlement.
