Simon Chesterman has been appointed as the David Marshall Professor of Law

Simon is Vice Provost for Educational Innovation at NUS, where he is also Dean of both NUS College and the Faculty of Law, as well as Senior Director of AI Governance at AI Singapore. He is also Editor of the Asian Journal of International Law and Co-President of the Law Schools Global League. Educated in Melbourne, Beijing, Amsterdam, and Oxford, he has taught at the Universities of Melbourne, Oxford, Southampton, Columbia, and Sciences Po. From 2006-2011, he was Global Professor and Director of the New York University School of Law Singapore Programme.

He is the author or editor of more than twenty books, including We, the Robots? Regulating Artificial Intelligence and the Limits of the Law(CUP, 2021); Law and Practice of the United Nations (with Ian Johnstone and David M. Malone, OUP, 2016); From Community to Compliance? The Evolution of Monitoring Obligations in ASEAN (CUP 2015); and One Nation Under Surveillance (OUP, 2011). In the past three years, he has published articles in the Cambridge International Law Journal, the Chicago Journal of International Law, the European Journal of International Law, the American Journal of Comparative Law, the Asian Journal of Comparative Law, and International & Comparative Law Quarterly.

The Chair was established in honour of David Marshall, a pre-eminent criminal lawyer who was also Singapore’s first Chief Minister and subsequent Ambassador to France. Walter Woon held the chair from his return to NUS Law in 2010 until his retirement earlier this year, when he was appointed Emeritus Professor.
