NUS Law was honoured to host The Honourable Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma Tao-li, GBM, Chief Justice of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal, on 16 November 2017, at the NUS Law Bukit Timah campus. Welcomed by Dean, Professor Simon Chesterman, Chief Justice Ma captivated the room with a lively discussion on various aspects of the law. Faculty members and students alike were actively engaged in the chat, and were keen to have the session go on longer than scheduled.

Chief Justice Ma was in Singapore to deliver the Singapore Academy of Law Distinguished Speaker Lecture titled: “Lawyers and the Public Interest: Is There Still Honour in the Profession” at the Supreme Court.

He was appointed Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal on 1 September 2010. He graduated with an LL.B. from Birmingham University in 1977. Before joining the Judiciary, Chief Justice Ma was in private practice in Hong Kong and in Singapore. Chief Justice Ma is a Patron of the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law; he is also a Patron of the International Advocacy Training Council. Chief Justice Ma was awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal in June 2012.
