Welcome Graduate Students!

August 5, 2014 | Student

NUS Law welcomed over 140 graduate students at an orientation cum welcome dinner organised on 5 August 2014. With students of diverse backgrounds from Asia, Europe and even as far as the Americas, the gathering truly resembled a melting pot of cultures, emphasising further NUS Law’s position as Asia’s Global Law School.

Starting off the event, the graduate students were divided according to their courses, where the respective course directors shared their expectations and introduced their classmates. The enthusiasm that exuded from the international students was infectious, and though they had only met moments before, many were soon engaged in friendly chatter. Later, the graduate students gathered in the auditorium for the address by the Dean, Prof Simon Chesterman. Prof Chesterman’s speech was filled with anecdotes and advice on studying at NUS Law. He also shared tips on living in Singapore, to the benefit of the majority who were new to the country. The students were also given a brief on administrative matters to note during their course of study.

Angelica Maria Linda Martinez Benedicto from the Philippines who will be doing her LL.M in Corporate and Financial Services says: “I would like to further upgrade my skills, specifically to tailor towards a more regional practice, so that I would be able to cater to clients in other jurisdictions, other than those based in civil law. NUS Law is one of the top schools if not the top school in Asia, so the choice is obvious.” She is joined by her husband, Noel Emmanuel Capinpin Gascon, who looks forward to learning the best practices in the industry and being at the forefront of the integrations of the Asian Economic community in 2015 when it makes history.

The evening rounded up with a buffet reception and an opportunity to mingle with classmates and faculty members.
