Winning the Asian British Parliamentary Debating Championships

NUS Law has emerged victorious in the Asian British Parliamentary Debating Championships organised by Beihang University, Beijing on the 1 October 2013 to 8 October 2013. A preeminent annual debate tournament consist of the best debaters in Asia, 112 teams from Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, China, Korea, Hong Kong, India, Macau and Japan competed in nine preliminary rounds of debates which covered a wide range of current issues including some legal topics.

NUS was crowned the champion after defeating Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), International Islamic University (Malaysia) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (Malaysia) in a unanimous decision (7-0) in the finals. NUS Law student Kelvin Chong was named the best speaker in the finals; other top ten speakers include teammate Xiao Hongyu and fellow law student Bryan Chan. NUS had fielded a total of five varsity teams comprising of students from different years. Having previously represented NUS in many regional and international debating competitions, this is the second win for Kelvin and Hongyu who had won the same competition last year when it was held in Jakarta, Indonesia.

On his win, Kelvin Chong says: “Both Xiao Hongyu and I are very honoured and happy to have brought pride to both NUS and the Faculty of Law.”
