European Book Launch of Fashion and Intellectual Property

May 28, 2026 | In the News

On 21 May 2026, the Institute for Information Law (IViR) at Amsterdam Law School hosted the European launch of Fashion and Intellectual Property, an edited book published by Cambridge University Press, at the Trademark Law Institute Conference. The theme of the conference was “Normative Average Consumer Concepts in AI, Sustainability and Free Expression Contexts”, and participants gathered to discuss the need for new conceptions of the average consumer in the light of the dual transition to AI-driven marketing and a circular economy.

Co-editors of the book, Professor David Tan and Professor Dev Gangjee, were present to share insights from their respective chapters on post-postmodernism in fashion and geographical indications respectively. Professor Martin Senftleben (Director, IViR, University of Amsterdam) also highlighted key takeaways from his chapter on fashion upcycling and sustainability. Professor Peter Yu (Director, Center for Law and Intellectual Property, Texas A&M University) provided an enthusiastic commentary on his positive impressions of the book.

Sir Robin Jacob, together with over two dozen participants, at the conference were joined by guests on Zoom (who included book chapter contributors Professors Robert Burrell and Emily Hudson) at the cosy book launch.

Professor David Tan is Head (Intellectual Property) at the EW Barker Centre for Law & Business and Co-Director of the Centre for Technology, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence & the Law at NUS Law. Professor Dev Gangjee is a Professor of Intellectual Property Law at Oxford and Director of the Oxford IP Research Centre.

The book is available in hardback edition and also as open access on Cambridge Core. To date, the book has received excellent reviews on IPKat and the Singapore Journal of Legal Studies.
