Independent Directors in Asia Conference

February 26, 2015 | Programmes

The Independent Directors in Asia conference, which was co-sponsored by the NUS Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS) and the NUS Centre for Law & Business (CLB), was successfully held at NUS Law on 26 & 27 February 2015. The conference, which was organised by Associate Professor Dan W. Puchniak, built on an extremely successful conference organised by Professor Harald Baum from the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law on 17 & 18 July 2014, in Berlin.

At the Berlin conference, it became abundantly clear that although there is a significant literature on independent directors generally, the vast majority of it views the issue through an Anglo-American (Western) lens. While independent directors (in various forms) have been transplanted into all of Asia’s leading economies, there has been no detailed comparison within Asia of the role that independent directors play (or should play) in Asia’s leading economies. The NUS conference successfully built on the findings from the Berlin conference and laid a solid foundation for the participants to produce a book to fill this gap in the literature.
