Named Prizes at NUS Law

Prizes are awarded to students who have performed the best in a particular course, recognising their hard work and spurring them on in their efforts to excel.

The following named prizes have been established at NUS Law:

Donated in 1950 by friends in memory of the late Mr. Adrian Clark, Legal Advisor to the Federated Malay States, this prize is for the best student in the Final Year LLB Examinations.

Championed by the Muslim Law Practice Committee of the Law Society of Singapore, and supported by various donors in memory of Professor Ahmad Ibrahim, who was Singapore’s first Attorney-General and who contributed significantly to the development of Islamic Law in Singapore, this prize is for the best student in the course Islamic Law.

Donated by Allen & Gledhill LLP, this prize is for the best students in each section of the compulsory course Company Law.

Donated by Allen & Gledhill LLP, this prize is for the top Juris Doctor student in the compulsory course Company Law.

Donated by Allen & Gledhill LLP, this prize is for the law student attaining the highest marks in the course Law & Technology.

Donated by the Asian Patent Attorneys Association (Singapore Group), this prize is for the top student in the course Law of Intellectual Property.

Donated by former students of Professor Bernard Brown who used to teach in the Faculty of Law, this prize is for the law student attaining the highest marks in the course Constitutional & Administrative Law.

Donated in 1999 by the Honourable Chief Justice Yong Pung How (LLD '01, Honoris Causa), this prize is for the best graduating student in the LLB and JD Programme.

Donated by Mr Chong Ik Wei ’96, this prize is for the law students attaining the highest marks in the course Law of Insurance.

Donated by Clifford Chance, this prize is for the law student attaining the highest marks in the course International Commercial Arbitration.

Donated by Clyde & Co Clasis Singapore Pte. Ltd., this prize is for the best students from each section of the compulsory course Introduction to Legal Theory.

Donated by Dr Jazmyn Chelliah, this prize is for the best student attaining the highest marks in the course Civil Justice and Process or Civil Procedure-related courses.

Donated by colleagues and friends in memory of the late Associate Professor Elizabeth Ng Siew Kuan who taught at the Faculty of Law for 31 years, this prize is for the law student(s) with the highest marks in the elective course International Patent Law, Policy and Practice.

Donated by various donors in honour of Professor Francis Martin Baillie Reynolds, this prize is for the best student in the course Domestic & International Sale of Goods. Professor Reynolds has been a visiting professor at the Faculty over the past 25 years, and is one of the foreign academics who has helped NUS Law the most.

Donated by Grabtaxi Holdings Pte Ltd, this prize is for the best law students in a technology law course to be determined each year.

Donated by Helmsman LLC, this prize is for the best student in the course Maritime Law.

Donated by I.R.B. Law LLP, this prize is for the best student in the course Trial Advocacy

Donated by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore, this prize is for the law student with the highest marks in the course Foundations of IP Law.

Donated by family, friends and colleagues of James Low Hong Ping LLM ’17 to honour his memory, this prize is for the top graduating student in the Master of Laws Programme at the Faculty.

Donated by the family of the late Ms Jenny Lau (Professor Michael Chee and Mrs Helen Chee), this prize is for the law student attaining the highest marks in the course International Environmental Law & Policy.

Donated by Mr Joseph Liow ’92, this prize is for the best student in the course Construction Law.

Donated in 1990 by Mr V. K. Rajah ’82 in memory of the late Justice A V Winslow, this prize is for the best law student in the course Banking Law.

Donated in 1980 by Professor Tommy Koh ’61, this prize is for the best law student in the course Public International Law.

Donated by an anonymous donor in honour of the late Honourable Justice Lai Kew Chai ’66, this prize is for the best law undergraduate in the course Equity and Trusts.

Donated by The Law Society of Singapore, this prize is for the top two students in the Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 LLB Examinations.

Donated by the Chinese Newspapers Division of Singapore Press Holdings and Sony Systems Design International Pte Ltd, and with the consent of Mr Lee Kuan Yew (LLD ’13, Honoris Causa), this prize is for the best graduating student.

Donated by various donors in recognition of Emeritus Professor Leong Wai Kum’s tremendous impact on the development of Family Law in Singapore and her outstanding contributions to the Faculty in the course of her 40-year career, this prize is for the best student in family law-related courses.

Arising from the settlement of the estate of the late Mr Leow Chia Heng, this prize is for the best graduating student.

Donated by Mr Lim Chong Kin LLB ’95, LLM ’97, this prize is for the law student with the highest marks in the course Competition Law & Policy.

Donated by Ms Chew Gek Khim ‘84, this prize is for the best student in Corporate Finance Law (or if not offered, another related corporate law subject)

Donated by Joseph Tan Jude Benny LLP in memory of the late Honourable Justice M. Karthigesu, this prize is for the two best students in the Maritime Law subject cluster (as selected by the Faculty).

Donated by Emeritus Professor M. Sornarajah, this prize is for the best student in the elective course International Investment Law & Arbitration (or if not offered, another investment law course).

Donated by Emeritus Professor M. Sornarajah, this prize is for the best student in the elective course Developing States in a Changing World Order or if not offered, Current Problems in International Law.

Donated by Justice Philip Jeyaretnam in memory of his late mother, Margaret C. Walker, who was a practising advocate and solicitor in Singapore, and who taught land law as an adjunct at the Faculty of Law in the 1970s, this prize is for the Juris Doctor student attaining the highest marks in the compulsory course Principles of Property Law.

Donated by various donors in recognition of Associate Professor Margaret Fordham’s many contributions in this subject area and to NUS Law during her 33 years as a faculty member, this prize is for the best student in the course Advanced Torts.

Donated by the Maritime Law Association of Singapore, this prize is for the best student in the course Carriage of Goods by Sea.

Donated by the Maritime Law Association of Singapore, this prize is for the best student in the course Charterparties.

Donated by Mediacorp Pte Ltd, this prize is given to the law student attaining the highest marks in the course Entertainment Law.

Donated by various donors in recognition of former NUS Law Professor Michael Hor’s ’84 significant achievements in the areas of criminal law, criminal legal process and freedom of expression, this prize is for the best student in the course Freedom of Speech: Critical and Comparative Perspectives.

Donated by Mrs Gladys Mirandah ’76 to commemorate her 45th year since being called to the bar, this prize is for the most improved graduating student based on the student with the greatest increase in rankings from Year 3 to Year 4.

Established in memory of the late Professor James Louis Montrose and Professor L.C.B. Gower, this prize is for the best student in the course Jurisprudence.

Donated by Mr Benny Tan Zhi Peng from the Class of 2012, this prize rewards six second year law students each year, whose results have improved the most based on a comparison of their rankings in their first and second years.

Donated in 2010 by the National University of Singapore Society (NUSS), this prize is for the best graduate throughout the course of study with outstanding all-round achievements (Academic excellence (at least Second Class Upper Division Honours) and a proven track record of active participation in NUS activities, preferably in leadership activities).

Top full-time matriculated undergraduate(s) at NUS with Faculty’s support on the merit of the project, having either credit-gaining coursework-based projects, or independent non-credit-gaining non-coursework-based projects will be given S$2,000 for individual, S$5,000 for a group of less than or equal to 5 members

Donated by Oxford University Press, this prize is for the best student in the Year 1 LLB Examinations.

Donated by various donors, this prize is for the best overall student in the module Mediation.

Donated by former colleagues in memory of the late Professor Peter English, this prize is for the best student in each section of the course Criminal Law.

Donated by Mr Paul Sandosham Dip.Sing.Law '95 in memory of his late grandfather, Mr Arthur Anantharaj Sandosham, who was Professor of Parasitology at the Faculty of Medicine and later Principal of the University of Malaya, Singapore (1959), this prize is for the law student attaining the highest marks in the course International Dispute Settlement.

Donated by Emeritus Professor Koh Kheng Lian ’61 LLM ’66 PhD ’72, in memory of her late mother, this Prize seeks to not just recognise students for their aptitude in environmental law subjects and their track record of participation in environmental causes, but also to encourage them to continue in the cause as a steward of the environment.

Donated by the Singapore Academy of Law, this prize is for the top student in the Final Year LLB Examinations.

Donated by the Singapore Academy of Law, this prize is for the best student in the compulsory course Singapore Law in Context.

Donated by Singapore Institute of Arbitrators (SIArb), this medal and prize is for the top student in the Masters of Law (International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution) Programme.

Donated by Ms Su Yin Anand '03, this prize is for the law student attaining the highest marks in the course Law of the Sea.

Donated by Professor Tan Cheng Han SC ’87 in memory of his father, Mr Tan Hock Kim, this prize is for the law student(s) with the highest marks in the course Advanced Contract Law.

Named after Mr Yong Heng Kin, a self-educated businessman who valued formal education for his children, this prize is for the best student in the course Law of Contract.
